She could barely contain her excitement as she felt the magic flow from her fingers and lifted the parchments and quill into the air. She had finally done it ! Her very first spell, a minor Levitate object. She wasn’t sure if she dared to open her eyes. She had to be careful least the ruling sorcerers would feel the weave being manipulated though. She had chosen to practice in the early morning hours since most of them would sleep, only servants like her would be awake.
Her country firmly believed that power was reserved for men alone, just like most countries around her. But hers had gone the step further. The only magic allowed was the one practiced by the men through sorcery. Any magic, be it by men or women, learned through the written word was a death sentence.
She herself had been a firm believer in this, promoted it anywhere she could, after all she was taught her race, the elves, had been nearly eradicated because of wizardry gone wrong. This was why she’d been permitted to take care of the female prisoners. But she also knew it was because she was expendable, should she fall from her path, no one decry it if another fallen woman was beheaded. And so she’d listened to the wizards they brought in, hearing stories of women from afar of influence, wielding powers of the untold.
The thoughts had crept into her mind, and 3 of the prisoners had sacrificed their own chance of redemption by conjuring a spellbook, a magic quill and a dress as gift to her, an item from each of them. She was to call on the sorcerers and tell them the women had done a ritual but she’d throw the nearest torch on one of them them, and stopped it; to keep up the facade. And so she saw them loose their life with no mercy, she had to conceal her tears, she knew she now had a chance as she after the execution rushed to her room to find the items gifted her.
