Today, the editor-in-chief wanted me to write a story about Yuum Baalal Grotto and especially the monster in the depths. A monster sounded frightening and I’m not a very good swimmer, but I like my job, so I packed a waterproof camera and ventured onwards, towards an adventure.

First, I must say the Yuum Baalal Grotto looks breathtaking! I stood by the deep pond at the center of the region and stared at the depths, trying to catch a glimpse of the monster from a safe distance, but all I saw was a school of fish. Perhaps my boss had been wrong and there was no monster. Wait! I caught a glimpse of movement so far below the surface, that it was barely visible. But I knew I had seen something.

I reached further over the water’s edge when I heard the song. It was unlike what I had ever heard before, beautiful yet terrible all at the same time. Like in a dream, I inched closer to the pond, dived in and just sank. Then, I saw the monster; a giant worm-like creature with menacing red eyes and teeth sharp like daggers. It was staring at me hungrily.

I was almost out of the air, panicking and the way back to the surface seemed like a mile away. The monster slithered closer and wrapped me around its’ tail-side. Oh shyte, had my time to meet my maker finally come? I knew I had tempted the fate way too many times in my adventures at the Fairelands – not intentionally, though – but somehow, I got the feeling my maker wasn’t gonna care about that little fact.

Wait? I was moving upwards! What was going on? I had been so worried about dying that I hadn’t noticed that the worm was now swimming towards the surface, quite fast, too, considering it was a worm. I didn’t even know they could swim.

I was so close to the surface I could see the rocks, the plants and a few curious bystanders who had witnessed me falling into the water. Just when I was about to get my head above the surface to get some precious air, I heard the haunting song anew. I turned my head, wanting desperately to break free from the worm, when I saw her. The most gorgeous creature I had ever laid my eyes on. I think I was in love. She was reaching her hand towards me, waiting to lead me to the depths anew and I would have let her, had the worm not tossed me to the shore.

I gasped. Oh, you precious air, I shall never take you for granted again! I felt my lungs filled with sweet, fresh air, and once I was able to breathe somewhat normally again, I glanced into the pond. There was nothing but the school of fish to be seen now, but there had indeed been a monster, just not the one I thought it was. A lesson I learned today; never judge a book from its cover.
